Letter-Campaign Urging BOT Reform

Never before has the opportunity to reform the BOT been more available, but we must work together to fix Penn State. Outgoing Pennsylvania Auditor General, Jack Wagner, has asked that Penn Staters write letters to all Penn State Trustees, urging them to accept his recommended reforms to the structure and procedures of the Penn State Board of Trustees.

How to Write Your Letter & What to Say

AG Wagner asks that we list specific "musts" from his recommendations:

  1. President of PSU is not on the Board
  2. Governor is a non-voting member only
  3. A quorum is half plus one
  4. The size of the board be reduced to 21 voting members
  5. Term limit maximized at 9 years. (Those who have already served 9 will finish at end of current term.)
  6. That Penn State fully comply with the "Right to Know" laws

AG Wagner says that hard copy letters are much more influential than e-mails. If at all possible, please write and send letters by mail. We know this is time-consuming and expensive, but this is one HUGE thing we can do to help promote the change that is so desperately needed to improve governance at Penn State. It is OKAY to use the same letter for all Trustees. (Don't skip the "new" Trustees -- they need to be able to wheel in a shedload of letters and demand that the others take notice.)

IMPORTANT: It is essential that our letters be professional in tone -- we cannot give them any excuse to disregard our message.

If you absolutely can't manage the hard copy letters, then sending e-mails is a good second choice. Please put something clear in your subject line, like "Support Wagner's board reforms" so they will at least be forced to see your purpose before they delete it.

Timing is imperative on this. We want them to have received our letters prior to the Jan. 17-18 BOT meetings. It would be ideal if letters can reach their destination by January 14th.

Thanks in advance for your efforts. It may well be likely that the Board will not embrace reform, even if many write. We have a plan already in place should this be the case, but we must try our best and allow the Board every opportunity to see that these common-sense reforms must be accomplished for Penn State to move forward. If they do not embrace reform, as we suspect they might - I mean hey, did the Board do anything in 2012 that looked remotely like "meaningful reform to governance"? No, they just wanted to go back to business as usual - we will embark on another letter-writing campaign; this one will be to legislate reform. Reform now, or reform later ... either way - REFORM.

For the Glory!

PS - If the BOT page below reminds you a bit of the BOT membership webpage, it is by design. We believe that if the Board were truly transparent, open & accessible, members would be issued an "initial.lastname@bot.psu.edu" email address as soon as they became a Trustee. We designed our page as a mock-up of theirs, but adding that feature (clicking the "contact Trustee" link over most portraits provides a way to email that particular Trustee).
